Around the MIAA
The women's volleyball team fell to Albion 3-1 at home after winning the first set on Saturday.
Albion has won four in a row, all in four sets…Setter Grace VanDorn (West Aurora, Ill.) has run her string of double-doubles to five in a row with 26 assists and 12 digs vs. Saint Mary’s and 23 assists and 17 digs at Adrian…OH Kelsey Gustafson (Armada, Mich.) moved into sixth place on Albion’s all-time list for kills with 784…RS Kate Winter (White Lake, Mich.) has achieved double figures in kills in her last six matches. She hit .267 (29-9-75) in two matches vs. MIAA rivals last week…MB Alexa Hitchko (Chico, Calif.) knocked down 15 blocks in the two matches vs. MIAA rivals last week. Her eight blocks vs. Saint Mary’s was a season high…MB Chloe Webber (Marshall, Mich.) assisted on seven blocks vs. Saint Mary’s…S Ava Smith (Wabash, Ind./Northfield) completed her fourth double-double of the season with 14 assists, 10 digs vs. Saint Mary’s.
The Scots took down Kalamazoo 3-2 and Defiance 3-1 on Saturday (Sept. 28), this after dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 19 Hope on Tuesday (Sept. 24). Sophomore Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.) paced Alma in kills and digs over the weekend while sophomore Kylie Sicken (Shelby Twp., Mich.) continued to lead the team in blocks. The win over Kalamazoo was the first five-set match the Scots played this year. The Scots were particularly effective on the attack against Defiance, hitting .362 behind Majerle's 24 kills. Alma hit .297 on average over its two wins.
Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-23 victory at rival Hope Saturday afternoon. Calvin featured a strong team blocking attack in the win, recording 12 block assists and a pair of solo blocks. Senior Sarah DeVries accounted for a match-high 19.5 points with 16 kills, a service ace and four blocks (three assist, one solo) while also amassing 22 assists. Sophomore Kelsey Smith had 11 kills and three aces. Sophomore Anna Schriemer had 19 assists and freshman Aubrey Wrubel 12 digs and a pair of aces. Calvin will host Kalamazoo Wednesday at Van Noord Arena.
Hope went 1-1 to start MIAA play last week — winning in three sets at Alma College on Tuesday and losing at home to No. 2 Calvin University on Saturday. Against Alma, middle hitter McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Ill.) recorded four of her match-high 11 kills during the decisive finish. Otto delivered a kill percent of .391 for the match. Against Calvin, Sophomore outside hitter Ana Grunewald (Grand Rapids, Mich.) totaled 11 kills to lead the Flying Dutch.
The Hornets dropped three matches this week at home as they fell to Olivet 3-0 on Tuesday before losing 3-2 to Alma and Defiance over the weekend. Madi Goodman led the team with 47 kills on the week including 24 in the final match against Defiance. Ashley Rill added 23 kills on the week along with 42 digs which were second on the team. Taylor Ferguson led the way defensively with 69 digs. Grace Kraft logged 118 assists and 50 of which were in the Defiance match. Kalamazoo will continue MIAA play with a match at Calvin on Wednesday before traveling to Saint Mary's for a non-conference tilt against the Belles.
Olivet split its first two MIAA last week, sweeping Kalamazoo College Wednesday in three sets and losing at home to Trine (Ind.) University Saturday in four sets. For the two matches, junior Laken Groll totaled 22 kills and six blocks. Senior Morgan Champion finished with 21 kills and five blocks. Senior Gabrielle Mundt recorded 41 digs and needs only 12 to move into second all-time at Olivet. Senior Madelyn Notenbaum dished out 75 set assists. She needs only two aces to reach 100 all-time at Olivet.
The Belles fell in a pair of 3-1 finals against Albion and North Park last week. Brittney Tarkanyi collected 20 digs for the Belles at Albion as the junior surpassed the 500-dig plateau. Megan Collantes led all players with 15 kills on the night while putting up 20 digs against the Brits. On Friday, Nicole Lukens led all players with 17 kills in the match against North Park while tallying a double-double with 15 digs. Morgan VanderWey collected 79 assists (9.875 asst/set) for the Belles.
The Thunder finished the week with a 3-1 record overall while going 2-0 in the MIAA. They will face off with Alma and Calvin this week.
