Around the MIAA
Calvin bounced Albion from the MIAA Tournament in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) at VanNoord Arena. For the Britons: Kate Winter led the attack with 12 kills, giving her a team-high 318 for the season. Alexa Hitchko was effective in the middle of the floor, producing seven kills and four blocks. She moved into eighth place on Albion's single-season list for blocks with 83. Kelsey Gustafson, playing in her final collegiate match, also collected seven kills. She finished her career with 887 kills, fifth-most all-time at Albion Setter Grace VanDorn achieved another double-double in assists (20) and digs (10) Jenna Khoury collected 15 digs to finish with 493 in her first season as Albion's full-time libero.
Sara Majerle (Rockford, Mich.), Georgia Miller (Georgetown, Ky.) and Haley Novak (Midland, Mich.) were all named All-MIAA players with Majerle landing on the First Team and Miller and Novak on the Second Team. The Scots fell in four sets to Albion on Tuesday (Nov. 5) in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. Majerle had 20 kills in the loss.
Calvin won the MIAA Tournament by defeating Albion and Hope. In the semifinal game, Calvin swept Albion in three sets and beat Hope in the final in four sets. Sarah DeVries had 16 kills and 18 digs against Hope.
The Flying Dutch received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament after finishing runner-up in the MIAA Tournament. On Saturday, the Flying Dutch lost the final at Calvin in four sets. Sophomore middle hitter McKenna Otto (Wheaton, Ill.) led the team with 16 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Molly Ligon (Beverly Hills, Mich.) had 14 kills and a team-high five block assists. On Friday, Hope defeated Trine in the semifinals in three sets. Molly Ligon's 13 kills and five blocks topped the Flying Dutch.
The Belles' season came to a close in a 3-1 loss to third-seeded Trine in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament last Tuesday. Nicole Lukens led the Belles with 17 kills and added 12 digs in the final match of her career for her 20th double-double of the season. Megan Collantes added a double-double of her own with 13 kills and 11 digs. Brittney Tarkanyi shared match-high honors with 19 digs.
The Thunder advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary's. In the semifinals, Hope was too much for the Trine as they bowed out of the MIAA Volleyball Tournament following a 3-0 loss.
