Calvin's DeVries Named First Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week for 2019

On Tuesday (Sept. 3), Calvin University senior Sarah DeVries was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week.

A native of Grand Rapids, Mich. and a graduate of Northpointe Christian High School, DeVries helped lead the Knights to a great opening week with three victories at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invitational. DeVries was named the Most Outstanding Player of the four-team event.

Against No. 23 Ohio Northern Aug. 30, DeVries finished the match with 17 kills, 11 assists, three solo blocks and a pair of service aces while hitting at a .424 clip. DeVries then amassed 10 kills, nine assists and five blocks against No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan Aug. 31; DeVries was error-free against Illinois Wesleyan on 14 attempts.

In addition, DeVries picked up double-doubles against Ohio Northern (17 kills and 11 assists) and just missed a triple-double against Transylvania with 10 kills, 11 assists and eight digs to go with three block assists. For the week, DeVries hit .492 and averaged 4.9 points per set.

Also on Tuesday, DeVries was named the MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week.

This is the third time in as many seasons DeVries has received the national weekly award (Sept. 26, 2017; Sept. 25, 2018).
