Albion took the early team lead in a close start to MIAA Field Day Thursday, with five teams scoring at least 21 points through the first four events of the two-day competition, hosted by Hope.

Calvin's Michelle Koetje posted the first individual win of the MIAA Championship, winning the 10,000m run with a time of 37:33.43 while running in a steady downpour for much of the race.

Calvin added a second win later in the day, when Renee Miller won the long jump with a leap of 5.35m.

The Olivet throws tandem of Ariel Floyd and Lillian Albaugh became first-time MIAA Outdoor Champions in the hammer throw and shot put, respectively. Floyd won the hammer with a mark of 48.48m, while Albaugh captured the shot put title with an effort of 13.49m.

Men's Recap

Trine's Jeffery Barnett broke a 13-year record in the long jump, as the senior became a three-time MIAA Champion in the event with a leap of 7.32m in day one of action at the MIAA Field Day Thursday, hosted by Hope.

Calvin took the early lead through four events, combining for 58 team points to lead by 20 points over second-place Trine.

Albion's Kejuan Frazier successfully defended the MIAA title in the shot put, hitting 16.00m on the button.

Trine's Nick Gerber also became a two-time MIAA champion in the hammer throw, winning with a mark of 55.95m, edging out 2017 hammer champ Calvin's Brendan VanHouten by 0.12m.

In the only event decided on the track Thursday, Calvin's Jonathan Ellis won the 10,000m run with a time of 32:08.05.

Rainy conditions postponed the pole vault to Friday's schedule.
