Around the MIAA
The Bulldogs will next compete in Florida when the team takes a spring break trip to Orlando in March 4-7.
Kathryn Valade, Saige Jost and Madeline Samra were winners in singles and doubles as Albion College won its opening women's tennis match of the spring semester, 7-2, over Holy Cross College.
The women's tennis team made light work of St. Francis on Sunday (Feb. 24), beating the Cougars 8-1. Sophomore Brooke Butterfield (Portland, Mich. / Portland) and freshman Abigail Davenport (Downers Grove, Ill. / Downers Grove South) each won their matches in three sets, while junior Caroline Ross (Sandusky, Mich. / Sandusky) swept Gabby Buday and freshman Emily McDonald (Wheeler, Mich. / Bullock Creek High School) dropped just one game to Franny Muhlenkamp.

The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team lost its 2019 home opener 5-4 to John Carroll University Saturday. Sonal Bahl and Ella Knight won 8-3 at two doubles while Helen Pelak and Maddy Winarski won 8-7(3) at three doubles. Winarski won 6-0, 6-3 at two singles while Caroline Norton won in three sets at four singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Kalamazoo is back in action with a pair of matches at home next weekend. The Hornets take on Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon followed by Denison Sunday afternoon.
The Olivet College women's tennis team lost a close 5-4 match to Indiana University-South Bend. Freshman Jordin Ellens and Haley Eversole picked-up Olivet's doubles point at the No. 3 slot. They needed a tiebreaker to win the pro-set 9-8 (9). At No. 1 singles, junior Miranda Pier won the super-tiebreaker, 10-7, for the third set victory. At No. 2 singles, senior Rae Claramunt posted a straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Keely Cruz needed to win tiebreakers win two sets, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) at No. 4 singles.
The Belles won 9-0 against Spring Arbor before falling in a tight 5-4 match against Aquinas at Eastlake Athletic Club on Saturday. Elizabeth Preister and Alyssa Gulli each posted 4-0 records on the day. Meredith Heckert and Lilly Chamberlin were both 3-1 for the Belles.
The Thunder will return to action in the spring against King's (Pa.) March 4 in Orlando, Fla.
