Around the MIAA
The Adrian College women’s soccer team had three matches last week, and went 3-0 in those matches by a combined score of 14-1. The Bulldogs beat Saint Mary’s on Tuesday 6-0 last Tuesday and followed it up by beating Trine 5-1 on Saturday before beating North Central 3-0 in a non-conference match on Monday night. Junior Caroline Fleming totaled 12 points last week, with four goals and four assists and sophomore Angela Davis added four assists.
The Alma women’s soccer team dropped two conference bouts last week. On Tuesday, the Scots lost 2-0 at Calvin College. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant Mich./Mt. Pleasant) made a career-high 16 saves. Then Saturday versus Kalamazoo, Alma could not get out of an early hole and fell 4-1. Senior midfielder Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West) scored after she picked up her own rebound on a penalty shot.
Oct. 16: Defeated Alma, 2-0. Emily Van Vliet and Nicole Hale scored for the Knights. Oct. 20: Tied Albion, 1-1 in double overtime. Jessica Paulson scored for the Knights.
The Hope College women's soccer team moved within one win of a MIAA title with a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Albion at home and a 5-0 win at Saint Mary's last week. Senior Rylie Dalton of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) extended her scoring streak to three matches with the game-winning goal against Albion and two goals against Saint Mary's. The Flying Dutch have now shut out 10 opponents this season.
The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team split its matches with Olivet (0-1) and Alma (4-1) last week. The Hornets bounced back from the shut out against Olivet with a big four-goal game in which Kalamazoo got off to an early start in. Josie Sibley found the back of the net just six minutes into the match. Libby Munoz added goals in the 13th and 25th minutes before Kai Ketola connected on the final goal in the 72nd minute. Kalamazoo returns home to wrap up its regular season when it plays host to Elmhurst on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
The Olivet College women's soccer team defeated Kalamazoo, 1-0, to clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Emma Essen scored the lone goal in the 26th minute.
The Belles fell to the top two teams in the league last week with setbacks against Adrian on the road and Hope at home. Rose Stackhouse had three shots on goal against the Bulldogs while four different players registered a shot against the Flying Dutch. Thallia Robles made eight saves at Adrian, and Delaney Rohlman collected 11 saves versus Hope.
The Trine University women's soccer team was defeated by visiting Adrian by the score of 5-1. Junior Marisa Robinett (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) scored the lone goal on a penalty kick.
