Around the MIAA
The Adrian College women's soccer team opened conference play last week with two wins. The Bulldogs traveled to Olivet for the first game of MIAA action last Wednesday (Sept. 26) and beat the Comets 2-1. On Saturday (Sept. 29), Adrian hosted Alma in a rematch of a non-conference game 10 days prior. The Bulldogs took down the Scots 6-1, with freshman McKenna Mahoney having an impressive day offensively, scoring two goals and adding two assists.
Tori Aquilino (Plymouth, Mich./Canton) scored her first career goal in a tie with Trine and Lexi Moyer (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City West) scored her first goal of the season in Alma's loss at Adrian last week. Keeper Ally Wentworth (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) made 10 saves against the Bulldogs. Wentworth's save total was three off her career-high, et earlier this season also against the Bulldogs.
Calvin opened MIAA play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Kalamazoo Saturday night (Sept. 29). Senior Emily Van Vliet scored both goals as Calvin improved to 6-2-1 overall. The Knights host Adrian Tuesday and travel to rival Hope on Saturday.
Last week, the then-13th ranked Hope College women's soccer team opened MIAA play with a 2-0 win at Kalamazoo on Wednesday (Sept. 26) and 2-0 win at home vs. Olivet on Saturday (Sept. 29). Goalie Jordanne Ellingboe now has six shutouts on the season. She has 19 shutouts for her career and moved into sole possession of second place all-time among Hope goalies.
The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team began MIAA play last week with two tough losses to conference rivals Hope (2-0) and Calvin (2-0). The Hornets played tough with the No. 13 Flying Dutch, but were unable to convert on the scoring opportunities they had throughout the match. The Hornets delivered 10 shots with five on them being on net. Sophomore goalie Hannah Wolfe added eight saves to her season total in the loss. Saturday's match with Calvin also proved to be one of tough competition as the Hornets went scoreless in that one as well. Kalamazoo returns to action to face Trine on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
The Olivet College women's soccer team opened MIAA play with two losses -- 2-1 at home to Adrian College and 2-0 on the road at Hope College. Against the Bulldogs, Emma Essen scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Belles went 1-1 on the week with a 3-1 setback at Albion and a record-breaking 12-0 win at home over Rockford. Alexis Hernandez scored her first goal of the year against Albion. Ten different players registered at least one point in a school record-breaking performance against Rockford, led by Sophie Bubnar's hat trick.
Trine opened the MIAA portion of the season with a 0-1-1 record, drawing with Alma and then dropping their match to Albion. Junior Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Mich./Leo) scored the Thunder's lone goal of the week.
