Sophomore Isaiah Espinoza become the second Bulldog in school history to earn MIAA Wrestler of the Week when he was honored on Monday…he claimed the 285-pound championship at the 2020 Waynesburg University Invitational, helping the Bulldogs place eighth out of 16 schools with 62.5 points, where he accounted for a Bulldog-high 22 points toward the team total and posted a 5-0 record…his day included three pins and a title-bout victory over nationally-ranked Rocky McGeary (No. 7 by D3wrestler.com and No. 8 by Intermat) of the hometown team in a 5-1 decision… Espinoza leads Adrian with a 22-3 record on the season and 10 pins…Adrian faces No. 25-ranked Olivet in the MIAA opener on Tuesday…the Bulldogs are 9-4 on the season, breaking the modern-day program for dual-wins in a season at the Dec. 14 Kalahari Resorts Duals (The 2018-19 squad finished with an 8-3 record.)…junior Devon Pingel, who is ranked No. 6 D3wrestle and No. 7 by the National Wrestling Coaches' Association at 197 pounds, owns a 20-2 mark with 10 pins.
Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.) scored two wins by major decision at the DIII National Challenge on Saturday (Jan. 4). Ladd took down Mount Union's Nolan Wochna 13-2 and Chicago's Chaise Hauck 16-4. His was one of three wins over the Purple Raiders; Jayce Kuehnlein (St. Louis, Mich.) also had a win, a 13-10 decision over Michael McIntire. Overall, Alma fell in each of its dual matches to Mount Union, University of Chicago and UW-Whitewater.
Did not compete last week. Begins its quest for a second straight MIAA title Tuesday when it hosts Adrian College. The match is a benefit, with the OC athletic department donating $1 per fan in attendance to the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan.
Finished 13th at the Manchester University Spartan Mat Classic...juniors Efrain Amezquita and Jacob Garrett both placed in their respective weight classes...Amezquita finished sixth in the 165-pound bracket and was 3-2 on the day...Garrett placed seventh at 285-pounds and went 4-2 for the tournament.
