Around the MIAA

Adrian (8-7, 3-5)

The Adrian College women’s lacrosse team saw its season end with a pair of losses last week. The Bulldogs lost to eventual MIAA champions Saint Mary’s on Wednesday, 19-3 before dropping a heartbreaker to Kalamazoo on Saturday to finish out the season with a 13-12 overtime loss. Senior Annie Rice hit the 100-assist mark on Saturday and became just the third Bulldog to do so. She ends her career with 101 assists and 199 points, finishing third in program history in assists and sixth in points. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Emerson finishes her career with 215 saves, putting her in second place in program history.


Albion (12-4, 7-1)

Albion finished the regular season at 12-4 overall, its most successful year since the 2015 team went 15-3…Darcy Muns (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Marah Ranger (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored three goals apiece, and Carly Schwarz (Clinton Township, Mich.) added two goals and five assists in Albion’s 14-12 loss at Saint Mary’s to finish the regular season.

Alma (4-10, 1-7)

Alma ended its year with an 18-2 win over Olivet on Saturday (April 27). Goalie Allie Ray (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) ends her junior year as the Division I, II and III leader in saves per game with 15.71 and is tied for third across all divisions with 220 saves. Junior Olivia Benoit (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) posted 48 goals and 56 points, eighth and ninth on the program's single-season record list, respectively. She also earned 55 draw controls, the third-most in one year in Alma's history.


Calvin (11-6, 6-2)

Calvin closed out its regular season with a 20-1 win over Trine University last Wednesday. The Knights finished third in the final MIAA regular season standings at 6-2 in league play. Calvin gains the No. 3 seed for the MIAA Tournament this week and will travel to Albion on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. semifinal match. In its win over Trine last week, Calvin (11-6 overall) received four goals from senior Lauryn Slachter and three assists from freshman Drew Jansma. Senior goalie Ellis Chalfant had five saves to raise her career saves total to 413.


Hope (10-5, 5-3)

The Hope College women's lacrosse team reached a team record for wins in a single season after defeating Alma College, 18-1, and Trine University, 19-3, last week at home. The 10 wins surpassed the 2017 total of nine. Hope also earned the No. 4 seed for this week's MIAA Tournament. Sophomore midfielder Carly Pieri of Alto, Michigan scored four goals in each game.

Kalamazoo (6-10, 4-4)

The Hornets wrapped up their season this week with wins over Olivet (21-1) and Adrian (13-12, OT). Rachel Madar scored 14 goals in Kalamazoo's two games to bring her season total to 67. Madar also ended the season with 139 draw controls which placed her first in the MIAA. Senior Amanda Moss was second on the team in goals (33) and points (48). Her 15 assists were good for first on the team. Sophomore Lilly Baumann used a big final week to bring her season points total to 30 with 18 goals and 12 assists.


Olivet (0-11, 0-8)

The Olivet College women's lacrosse team wrapped-up its season last week with 21-1 loss at Kalamazoo and an 18-2 loss on Senior Day to Alma College.


Saint Mary's (12-5, 8-0)

The Belles defeated both Adrian and Albion to capture the program's first MIAA Championship with an 8-0 record in league play. Against Adrian, Kendra Osinski and Erin Doyle led the offensive efforts with five goals each. Doyle became the first player in program history to score 100 goals in a single season as the sophomore also added five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls. Versus Albion in a matchup of conference undefeated sides, Kate Kelly led all players with six goals to match her career-high for a single game. The senior co-captain also had game-highs of 11 draw controls, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers.
