FREELAND, Mich. – In a preseason poll of nine Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball coaches, Hope was predicted to finish first in the 2019-20 MIAA race.
Hope received all eight possible first-place votes to receive 64 points. Trine, the 2019 MIAA regular season and tournament champion, ranked second with 55 points and the remaining first-place vote. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team.
Albion ranked third with 51 points, while Calvin edged Alma for fourth place, 42 points to 38 points. Saint Mary's gathered 29 points to rank sixth, while Adrian ranked slightly ahead of Olivet for seventh place; Kalamazoo rounded out the poll.
Hope (24-5, 14-2 in MIAA in 2018-19) advanced to the Second Round of the 2019 NCAA Championship last year. Returning for the Flying Dutch are 2019 MIAA Defensive MVP junior Olivia Voskuil and junior Kenedy Schoonveld, a two time First-Team All-MIAA selection.
Trine (26-3, 16-0 MIAA) appeared in the 2019 NCAA Championship last season for the third consecutive year before falling in the Second Round.
Albion (18-8, 10-6 MIAA) returns three All-MIAA honorees from last season: junior Rain Hinton, a first-team All-MIAA selection, and second-team All-MIAA honorees Evelyn Wischmeyer Emily Bernas.
Calvin (12-14, 7-9 MIAA) returns sophomore Gabby Timmer, who led the MIAA in scoring last year with 18.5 ppg in 15 league contests. Earlier this month, Timmer was named a preseason honorable mention All-American by D3hoops.com.
The 2019-20 women's basketball season tips-off on Friday, Nov. 8, with Hope and Adrian all taking the court in non-conference contests. MIAA play gets underway Wednesday, Dec. 4 with Alma traveling to Saint Mary's and Adrian heading to Hope.
The 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament will feature six teams and begin with first round play Wednesday, Feb. 26; semifinal and final action will be at the highest seed Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-29. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.
