Around the MIAA
Adrian suffered an 88-50 setback at No. 2-ranked Hope in its only action of the week…despite the loss, Ashley Morris posted game highs of 18 points and nine rebounds, and Sha'Trice Graves added a game-best six blocked shots (second-most in a conference game in Bulldogs history) along with a season-best three steals and nine rebounds…on the season, Morris is ranked fifth in the MIAA with 14.7 points per game as well as a 52.8 field goal percentage…as a team, the Bulldogs are second in field goal percentage defense (.340)…Graves leads the nation with 25 blocked shots…Adrian hosts Alma on Wednesday and travels to Saint Mary's (Ind.) on Saturday for the last week of fall semester classes.
The Scots earned their fourth-straight victory Tuesday (Nov. 27) when they defeated Anderson University in Indiana by a score of 65-53. Sophomore forward Jessie Jordan (Mason, Mich./Williamston) scored a career-high 29 points and broke the program record for threes in a single game with eight. Alma's longest win streak since 2006 came to an end Saturday (Dec. 1) when they lost to No. 12 Trine, 77-46, to kick off MIAA play. Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child) scored a team-high 10 points and sophomore forward Charley Hengesbach (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Calvin improved to 4-3 overall with victories over Finlandia and St. Mary's last week. Calvin opened the week with a 62-56 win over Finlandia Wednesday. Freshman Gabby Timmer had 27 points and 11 rebounds with freshman Baylee GalanBrowne tossing in 12 points. On Saturday, Calvin opened its conference schedule with a 62-54 win at Saint Mary's. Timmer scored 27 points for the second straight game. Senior Becca Richards popped in 14 points. Calvin hit 8 of 16 from three-point range in the win. The Knights host 11th-ranked Trine (6-1) on Saturday in a 3 p.m. conference contest.
Hope opened MIAA play with two victories: 88-50 against Adrian at home on Wednesday and 86-48 at Olivet on Saturday. Against Adrian, sophomore point guard Lauren Newman (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) led a balanced attack with 12 points. The Flying Dutch forced 35 turnovers. Against Olivet, senior forward Francesca Buchanan (Grant, Mich./Sparta) recorded her second double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 19 rebounds. Buchanan matched her career-high in rebounds from a Nov. 29, 2017 victory against Olivet at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost both of its games on the week. Kalamazoo hosted both Anderson (66-48) and Oberlin (71-26). Freshman Kaytlyn Tidey led the way offensively in both games scoring 15 and 10 points respectively. Amanda Moss added 11 points in Kalamazoo's game against Anderson. The Hornets begin MIAA play on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when they travel to Trine for a 8 p.m. tip-off.
The Olivet College women's basketball team lost 86-48 to MIAA rival and nationally-ranked Hope College Dec. 1 at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Flying Dutch entered the game ranked No. 2 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
The Belles fell in a pair of close contests to Dominican and Calvin last week. The host Stars made a layup at the buzzer for a 60-58 final on Wednesday, and the Belles made multiple comebacks but fell short in a 62-54 final at home against Calvin. Giavanna Paradiso led all players with 24 points and shared game-high honors with nine rebounds against Dominican. Bella Dugas scored nine of her 15 points in the second half of play to help pace Saint Mary's while Jade Mosier notched her first double-double with the Belles by scoring 15 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds versus Calvin.
