Around the MIAA

Adrian (9-11, 5-6)

Adrian has moved into the MIAA playoff picture after avenging earlier losses to Saint Mary's (Ind.) at home, 60-51, and at Calvin, 62-55…a four-game conference winning streak has helped the Bulldogs into the sixth and final spot for the MIAA Tournament…during that stretch, Adrian’s scoring defense has been stingy at 46.3 points per game…freshman Freshman Rylee Campbell erupted for a career-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to pace all scorers; Campbell also had four steals in the seven-point victory at Calvin—breaking a 21-game losing streak to the Knights that dated back to the 2007-08 season…Adrian hosts third-place Albion on Wednesday and nationally-ranked Trine on Saturday…senior Ashley Morris leads the Bulldogs with a 13.8 scoring average and is the team’s active career leader with 859 points…sophomore Sha’Trice Graves ranks second in NCAA Division III with 63 blocked shots and second in the MIAA with 8.3 rebounds per game...Graves’ 63 blocks is two shy of setting a new AC single-season standard.

Albion (15-4, 7-3)

Albion broke a shooting slump by hitting 55 percent (36-of-55) against Finlandia last Friday. Prior to the game, Albion had endured three games where it did not shoot better than 33 percent…None of the Britons logged more than 19 minutes against Finlandia. Jami Hubbard (13) was Albion’s leading scorer, Rain Hinton chipped in with 12, Evelyn Wischmeyer with 11 and McKenzie Domine with a season-high 10.

Alma (10-10, 5-6)

The Scots had a 2-0 week with wins over Olivet on Wednesday (Jan. 23) and Kalamazoo on Saturday (Jan. 26). Alma led the entire game in their 63-44 victory over the Comets as sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich.) picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Scots followed it up with a dominating 76-47 win versus the Hornets. The freshmen pair of guards Oretha Humphries (Detroit, Mich.) and Stasha Warchock (Marquette, Mich.) were the team's leading scorers with 15 and 14 points respectively. The Scots shot a season-high 51.7 percent from the floor against Kalamazoo.

Calvin (9-11, 4-7)

No report submitted.

No. 10/11 Hope (16-3, 8-2)

The Flying Dutch split a pair of road games against the MIAA's first-and third-place teams. The Flying Dutch won 65-51 at Albion Wednesday behind 14 points apiece from forward Olivia Voskuil (Holland, Mich.) and guard Sydney Muller (Grand Rapids, Mich.). The Flying Dutch lost at Trine 78-72 despite a career-high matching 27 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Francesca Buchanant (Grant, Mich.).

Kalamazoo (0-19, 0-10)

The Hornets dropped both of their games last week, starting with a home match-up with Finlandia (68-58, OT) before heading to Alma (76-47) on Saturday. Forward Sierra Fraser was paramount in forcing the game with Finlandia into overtime by scoring 12 points and collecting a school-record 22 rebounds. Fraser's layup with three seconds left in regulation forced the game into overtime. Freshman Kaytlyn Tidey led the Hornets in scoring by averaging 19.0 points per game this week. Kalamazoo will head to Hope College on Wednesday, Jan. 30 before hosting Saint Mary's on Feb. 2.

Olivet (6-14, 2-9)

The Comets dropped two road MIAA contests last week, 63-44 vs. Alma and 53-49 vs. Saint Mary's. Against Alma, senior Shawnee Dame scored 11 points. Junior Tammy Lee contributed eight points and shared team-high honors with five rebounds. Freshman Beth Chick had seven points. Junior Amari Brown also grabbed five rebounds. Against Saint Mary's, Dame posted team-highs in points (14) and rebounds (nine). In Daitriona Bonds' first collegiate start, the sophomore scored nine points. Brown also had nine points.

Saint Mary's (9-11, 6-5)

The Belles bounced back from a 60-51 loss at Adrian on Wednesday with a 53-49 win at home over Olivet on Saturday. Jade Mosier led the Belles at Adrian with 16 points while Erin Maloney added 10 points and team-highs of seven rebounds and five steals. Giavanna Paradiso tallied a game-high 17 points against Olivet, and Mosier picked up a third double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 9/8 Trine (18-2, 11-0)

The Thunder stayed unbeaten in conference play with wins against Calvin (72-56) and No. 7/9 Hope (78-72). Both wins gave Trine sweeps of the both regular-season meetings and marked the first time Trine has won both meetings against Hope. Brandi Dawson averaged 22.0 points per game for the week and six rebounds per game to lead the Thunder.
