Around the MIAA
Adrian lost a pair of road games to nationally-ranked Trine, 87-35, and non-conference, intrastate foe Finlandia, 85-78 in overtime…this week, the Bulldogs complete a five-game road swing versus MIAA competition at Olivet (Jan. 16) and Kalamazoo (Jan. 19)—marking the longest stretch away from home since the start of the 2016-17 season (seven games)…despite the seven-point loss to the Lions, Adrian had eight blocked shots to reset a program record with 94 in a season…in 2017-18, Adrian had 89…sophomore Sha’Trice Graves continues to lead NCAA Division III with 54 blocks--which ranks second on the school's all-time single-season chart…classmate Rachel Bucher tied her career high for rebounds (11) while recording her first career double-double at Finlandia…senior Ashley Morris, who reached the 800-point plateau (809) last week, posted her fourth career double-double while tying her personal record of 25 points and setting one for rebounds (12) at Finlandia…Morris is Adrian’s top scorer with 14.1 points per game for eighth in the conference.
Alma went head-to-head with two tough opponents that sit high in the conference standings. On Wednesday (Jan. 9) the Scots' lost, 80-51, at nationally-ranked Hope College. Alma then hosted Albion college Saturday (Jan. 12) and fell to the Britons, 75-55. Senior forward Madeline Barnauskas (Livonia, Mich.) was the team's leading scorer in both games with 12 against Hope and 14 versus Albion. Sophomore center Jeny Brandt (Escanaba, Mich.) recorded her third double-double of the season Saturday with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Calvin dropped a pair of games last week, falling at Albion 88-62 on Wednesday and then dropping a 50-38 contest to Hope on Saturday. Freshman Gabby Timmer had 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Albion while freshman Stephanie Coors dropped in 10. In Saturday's contest against rival Hope, the Knights trailed by five mid-way through the fourth quarter but were outscored 14-7 down the stretch. Timmer just missed a triple-double, amassing 16 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high eight blocked shots. The Knights travel to Kalamazoo on Wednesday and will host Saint Mary's on Saturday.
The Kalamazoo College women’s basketball team fell at Saint Mary’s (70-48) and at home against Olivet (50-44) this week. Freshman Kaytlyn Tidey continued to lead Kalamazoo offensively with 18 points against the Belles and 14 points in the home contest with the Comets. Tidey has scored 10 or more points in 13 of Kalamazoo’s 15 games this season. The Hornets have a pair of home games this week as they play host to Calvin on Wednesday and Adrian on Saturday.
Olivet snapped a six-game losing streak with a 50-44 win at Kalamazoo. Junior Kim Buie came off the bench to post season-highs in points (11), rebounds (nine) and blocks (five). Senior Shawnee Dame finished with nine points. Junior Tammy Lee also grabbed nine rebounds.
The Belles went 1-1 on the week with a 70-48 win over Kalamazoo on Wednesday and an 84-47 setback against No. 11 Trine on Saturday. Giavanna Paradiso continued to lead the way with 18 points against the Hornets and 24 against the Thunder. Erin Maloney moved into third place all-time in program history for career steals in the victory against Kalamazoo.
Defeated Adrian (87-35) and Saint Mary's (84-47). Senior Brandi Dawson averaged 19.0 points per game for the week.
