Trine went 3-0 with a pair of wins agianst host DePauw to capture the Regional title and advance to the Super Regional round against Geneseo in the 2019 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The Thunder will host Geneseo for a best-of-three series May 17-18 at Trine's OneSport/Parkview Softball Field.
Trine started with a 4-3 win over Maryville, with a two-run RBI single by Lexi Clark in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Thunder. On May 11, it was senior Lainey McCue that had a career day for the Thunder, going four-for-five with three home runs and a double to aid in Trine's 17-4 seven-inning win over DePauw; Trine's 10-run seventh sealed the Saturday victory.
On Sunday, Trine needed only one run - a McCue home run in the fourth - to defeat DePauw a second time to win the Regional title. Kate Saupe scattered four hits from inside the circle for a complete-game shutout.
Calvin dropped their opener to MSOE May 9, 7-5, with a six-run first inning by MSOE putting the Knights in an early hole. On Friday, Calvin rebounded to win twice to stay alive, defeating Otterbein 8-6 and then gaining revenge on MSOE, 8-4. Against Otterbein, Calvin ignited for eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Grace Quiggle. Then, aganst MSOE May 10, the Knights vaulted past the Raiders with a six-run seventh inning after trailing 4-2 for much of the game; Quiggle again went yard, this time for a grand slam to put the Knights in the lead for good.
Needing to defeat host Illinois Wesleyan twice, Calvin could not find momentum on offense as Illinois Wesleyan knocked out the Knights, 8-0 in six innings.
