Around the MIAA

No. 32 Adrian

The Adrian College men’s track and field team had a strong showing in its final meet before the MIAA Championships, coming in sixth place at the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College last week and moving up to No. 26 in the country. Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Randy Fry had quite the week, finishing first in the 200-meter and fourth in the 100-meter. He set new PRs in both races and leads the conference in both heading into the championships. He is also 17th in the nation in the 100-meter. Marcus Higginbottom set a PR in the 100-meter as well, joining Fry in the top five of the MIAA. Jordan Davis and Denzel Tinsley both placed in the 110-meter hurdles last week and sit 1-2 in the MIAA and are both in the top 20 of the country.


Albion

Adam Ditri was fifth overall in the men's standings as Albion College sent its distance runners to Gina Relays for a tune up run in the 5,000 meters prior to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Championship next week. Ditri set a time of 14:57.16, finishing eight seconds off the face set by Cesar Arellano (Bowling Green State University). Andrew Wittland was 21st (15:14.50) and Aaron Weimer was 35th (15:25.40).


Alma

The track and field team took part in the Davenport University Tune-Up on Saturday (April 27), with the men placing fourth out of 14 teams. Sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich. / St. Philip Catholic Central) posted his own and the team's best time in the 200-meter dash at 22.62, finishing second. Senior Jared Fleming (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston) did the same in the 400. Senior Kyle Kraus (Middleville, Mich. / Thornapple-Kellogg) second in the javelin with a best of 43.66 meters, a new personal record. He also placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.80 meters.


Calvin

Calvin competed at both the Hillsdale Gina Relays and at the Davenport Invitationl this weekend. At the Hillsdale Gina Relays, junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) took first in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.81. Junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) had a time of 9:52.89. In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) clocked a time of 56.52. In the 5,000 meters, junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) had a time of 15:06.48 while freshman Ryan Vreeke (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) came in at 15:16.10 and sophomore Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) at 15:17.75. At the Davenport Invitational, senior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) took third in the long jump (22-9). Senior Nathan VanWhye (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was 10th (20-3). In the hammer throw, senior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second (172-1), sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was seventh (153-3) and sophomore Erick Van Eck (Yorba Linda, Ca./Hope PSP) eighth (152-9). Calvin will now prepare to compete at the MIAA Championships this Thursday and Friday at Hope College.


Hope

Hope College triple jumper Brandon Maurice finished runner-up at the Davenport University Invitational on Saturday. The junior from Howell, New Jersey (Howell HS) recorded a leap of 12.55 meters (41 feet, 2 ⅖ inches). The meet was one of two the Flying Dutchmen competed in over the weekend. On Friday, they were at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays. At the non-scoring Gina Relays, senior Justin Freeman of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) took fourth in the 200 meters by posting a time of 22.15 seconds.


Olivet

The Olivet College men's track and field geared up for the MIAA Field Day by participating in the three-day Hillsdale College "Gina" Relays. Junior Noah Bailey won the triple jump (43 feet, 8-1/2 inches) and was fifth in the long jump (22 feet, 1-1/2 inches). Sophomore Jacob Smith placed fifth in the shot put with a school-record toss of 51 feet, 8-1/4 inches. The previous record was 49 feet, 3 inches by Mike Parsons during the 1975 season. Freshman Kyle McDowell finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (:50.36). Freshman Bradley Hawkins was sixth in the javelin throw (134 feet, 9 inches) Senior Chris Womack matched his season-best time, 56.34 seconds, to place sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Tyler Peck posted a personal-best time of 50.89 seconds in the 400-meter dash. The 4x400-meter relay team of Bailey, Womack, Peck and McDowell crossed the line first with a season-best time of 3:18.00.
