Around the MIAA

No. 18 Adrian

The Adrian College men’s track and field team ran at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational last weekend and had the top finish among Division III schools at the competition. The Bulldogs also held in the top-20 of the USTFCCCA National Ratings Index, dropping two spots to No. 18. Senior Randy Fry finished fourth on Saturday in the 200-meter with a 22.06, which is the fastest time in the MIAA. Joining him atop the MIAA is fellow senior Jordan Davis in the 400-meter hurdles after his time of 55.19. Sophomore high jumper Nicholas Jackson joined teammate Daz Lawrence at fifth in the nation with a jump of 6’9” on Saturday as well.


Albion College finished first in 10 of the 18 events and it had the top two performers in six as it celebrated a successful senior day in a triangular men's track and field meet at the Elkin Isaac Track. Kejuan Frazier was the big winner, finishing first in the discus throw (133' 3") and shot put (49' 10 ½"). Xavier Aikens, who was second to Frazier in the discus throw, took first place in the hammer throw at 142' 9". On the track, Cullen Cox had a nice day, leading teammate Kiehl Smith to the finish in the 400 meters and running second on the winning 4x100 relay. Richard Annorat, Markeese Boyd an dJeffrey Davis joined Cox on the relay. Albion's best event on the track was the 1,500 meters. Chase Baumgardner was the winner (4:20.58), with Nathaniel Jennings second and D'Anthony Goodwin third. Albion also had the top two performers in the 110 hurdles (Jephte Jean-Claude and Annorat), 5,000 meters (Andrew Wittland, Lucas Lusk) and high jump (Trevor Knowles, Annorat). Riley Barrett also won the 100 meters for Albion.


The Scots finished second in the Albion Tri-Meet on Friday behind the host Britons and ahead of Olivet. Sophomore Timothy Minier (Battle Creek, Mich.) and junior Payton Hirschenberger (Freeland, Mich.) earned wins in the men's 200-meter dash the 800-meter run, respectively.


Members of the Calvin men's track and field team competed at either the Bucknell Bison Classic or Oakland University Golden Grizzly Invitational this weekend. At Bucknell on Saturday, Calvin's distance runners had a strong afternoon and evening. Junior Caleb Ferguson posted a time of 9:16.11 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The time ranks 10th on the NCAA Division III performance list. In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Jonathan Ellis posted a career-best time of 30:33.86 that currently ranks 13th nationally. At the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational, senior Alex Williams took third in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.10. Junior Sam Veenstra had a season-best time of 55.88 in the 400 meter hurdles that was good for third place.


Ben Turner vaulted and Justin Freeman sprinted to first-place performances for the Hope College men’s outdoor track & field team on Saturday at the Huntington College (Indiana) Invitational. Turner, a senior from Albion, Michigan (Olivet HS), cleared 4.50 meters in the pole vault (14 feet, 9 inches) Freeman, a senior from Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa), clocked a winning 100-meter time of 10.76 seconds. Freeman also anchored the first-place 4x100 relay that posted a run of 43.54 seconds. He teamed with junior Korey Derr of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Northview), sophomore David Clark of Sterling Heights, Michigan (Stevenson) and junior Adam Howard of Jacksonville, Illinois (Routt Catholic).


The Olivet College men's track and field team competed at the Albion Triangular Friday, April 12. Junior Noah Bailey won the long jump with a school-record mark of 23 feet, 5-1/4 inches. He also took first-place in the triple jump (46 feet, 9 inches) and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay. Senior Kory Slaby took first-place in the javelin throw (138 feet, 2 inches), second-place in the hammer throw (140 feet, 4 inches) and fourth-place in the discus throw (120 feet, 8 inches). Senior Chris Womack was the winner in the 400-meter hurdles (:59.08) and ran the leadoff leg of the 4x4 relay.
