Four Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association track and field performers received accolades May 28 for achievement both in competition and in the classroom with their selection to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Division III Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Calvin's Jonathan Ellis, Tyler Johnson, and Brendan VanHouten were voted to the All-District 6 team, while Trine's Nick Zak was tabbed to the All-District 7 list; all four are now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America® honors.
Ellis, a sophomore with a 398 grade-point average in computer science, recently finished 19th at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 10,000m run. Ellis finished third at the 2018 MIAA Cross Country Championship in aiding Calvin to a perfect score.
Johnson completed his junior season as the runner up at the 2018 MIAA Cross Country Championship this past fall. Johnson owns a 3.69 GPA in mechanical engineering.
VanHouten, a recent graduate in accounting with a 3.79 GPA, placed 11th nationally in the discus throw and 13th nationally in the hammer throw at the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
Zak, a recent Trine graduate with a 4.0 grade-point average in civil engineering, was a top runner for both the cross country and track programs. Zak garnered All-Region honors by the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the indoor season and was an MIAA champion in the 1,500m run at the 2019 MIAA Field Day.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes outstanding student-athletes in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
CoSIDA's NCAA Division III District 6 includes Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin; District 7 covers Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Members of CoSIDA from the district vote on Academic All-District honors. Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale and must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
