Around the MIAA
The Adrian College men’s tennis team had four matches last week and picked up three wins on the week. The week started off with a 7-2 victory on Tuesday at Albion and was followed by a 9-0 beating of Alma. The final two matches were both decided with a score of 9-0, with the Bulldogs losing to Kalamazoo on Saturday and blanking Olivet on Sunday. AC has beaten the Comets 9-0 each time the two sides have played each other. Junior Tanner Wilcox went 3-1 in both doubles and singles play on the week while sophomore Jovanni Wagner-Payne had the same record in singles and went 1-1 in doubles.
Albion won two tightly contested matches to pull away for an 8-1 victory over Alma last Saturday. Albion gained a sweep of the doubles matches when Daniel McGarry and Patrick Smoker outlasted Brendan Murdie and David Suidgeest in a tiebreaker to decide the No. 3 flight. Albion won the bottom five flights in singles. Nick Kinachtchouk won a tiebreaker to decide the No. 2 slight after he split sets with Brett Reuter.
The men's tennis team fell in three matches it played in last week: 9-0 to Adrian and 8-1 to both Albion and Trine. Junior Brandon Ralston (Cadillac, Mich.) scored a hard-earned 7-6 [6-4], 6-2 win over Albion's Josh McGarry in Alma's only singles win of the week. He and Brett Reuter (Armada, Mich.) defeated Blake and Evan Trusty of Trine 8-2 for Alma's lone victory against the Thunder.
Calvin hit the double-digit plateau in victories with wins over Bethel (Ind.) and Olivet last week. The Knights are now 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. Calvin opened the week with a 8-1 loss at rival Hope but bounced back with an 8-1 non-conference win at Bethel. On Saturday, Calvin topped Olivet 9-0 to move into fourth place in the MIAA standings, close behind 4-2 Adrian and just ahead of 3-3 Trine. The Knights have a key conference match at Adrian on Wednesday.
The Hope College men's tennis team claimed two MIAA victories last week: 8-1 at home against Calvin College and 9-0 at Trine University. The Flying Dutchmen improved their record to 8-7 overall and 4-0 in MIAA play.
Kalamazoo swept both Olivet and Adrian to go undefeated in MIAA play this week before falling to No. 17 Gustavus Adolphus over the weekend. Casey Johnson finished the week with a 3-0 record at five singles. Johnson's three wins move his overall record to 11-6 this season while going 4-0 against MIAA competition. Following this week, Hornet tennis players are now 24-0 in MIAA singles matches and 12-0 in conference doubles matches to begin the season. The Hornets will look to stay undefeated with matches this week against Hope on Thursday and Albion Saturday.
The Olivet College men's tennis team wrapped-up its season last week with 9-0 losses to Kalamazoo, Calvin and Adrian.
The Thunder split their competitions this weekend. They were swept by visiting Hope on Saturday, before traveling to Alma and picking up the 8-1 victory. While none of the Thunder went undefeated on the week, four different players picked up two wins in the dual against Alma.
