Around the MIAA
Adrian opened the 2019 season with a 6-2 win at Franklin on Sunday. This is the most goals the Bulldogs have posted in a season-opener since they defeat Bluffton 6-0 in 2016. They have now won the past four season-openers.
Alex Sayeg's first collegiate goal helped Albion forge a 1-1 draw with Johnson & Wales (Colo.) University last Saturday. A first-year student who prepped at Walled Lake Central, Sayeg scored in the seventh minute. Jason Warras and Moses Jatta assisted on the goal. Goalkeeper Maximilian Loria stopped seven of eight shots faced. Albion started the season with a 4-1 loss to Colorado College on Friday. Dakota Clapper scored the Albion goal. Albion will play its next three non-league matches at home. The action begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the North Park University squad picked to win the championship in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Both of Alma's games went down to the wire in the opening week. The men's soccer team lost 3-2 to Aurora in the closing minutes on Friday (Aug. 31) but turned around and beat Benedictine 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday (Aug. 31). Senior Noah Canlas (Naperville, Ill.) tallied three points against Benedictine including the game-winning goal in double overtime. Sophomore Danten McFate (Haslett, Mich.) had a goal in each game for the first in their career.
Calvin went 1-1 on the weekend. The Knights defeated Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 but lost to Ohio Wesleyan in overtime, 2-1.
Hope kicked off the season with two wins in Aurora, Illinois: 5-1 vs. Benedictine (Ill.) and 2-0 vs. host Aurora. Senior forward Logan Bylsma (Hudsonville, Mich.) scored three goals during the two non-league matches. Goalie Blair McCormick (Wadsworth, Ill.) made four saves in the shutout victory.
Kalamazoo kicked off its 2019 season with a 1-1 record following a 1-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan and a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Illinois Wesleyan. Ben Meschke scored both goals for the Hornets this week. Sophomore Luke Kastran kept a clean sheet in Kalamazoo's season-opening win while recording nine saves. The Hornets now turn their attention to road matches at Manchester on Wednesday and Defiance on Saturday.
Olivet opened its season with a thrilling 4-3 double overtime win over Bluffton Aug. 30 at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. Junior Joshua Rosendale scored the Comets' first goal. After the Beavers tied the game, sophomore Dominik Burmeister tied the game. Another Bluffton goal leveled the score at 2-2 at halftime. The Beavers went ahead 3-2 before a Burmeister penalty kick goal with 37.4 seconds left in the second half sent the game to overtime. After neither team scored in the first extra period, freshman Coda Mendoza found the back of the goal for the winning goal with 2:01 left in the second overtime period.
Trine posted a pair of shutout victories against Earlham (1-0) and Anderson (2-0) to start the season. Nooh Aljabaly, Cedric Carbajal and Bailey Zurface all scored a goal to lead the team in points (two). Taylor Medina didn't allow a goal in two games at goalkeeper and finished with two saves for the week.
