Shirkey, Strait lift Alma to men's soccer victory

ALMA, Mich. – Albion College missed an opportunity to climb a rung or two on the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer table Saturday in a 1-0 loss at Alma College.

Evan Shirkey scored the only goal of the contest, striking for his third goal of the season in the 10th minute.

Alma went on the attack early, getting shots from Matt Sovis and Julian Birge in the first 5 ½ minutes of the contest. Shirkey scored on Alma's third shot of the day.

Albion tried to respond, winning a corner kick 2 ½ minutes after Shirkey's score and Andrew Prince placed a shot on goal in the 17th minute. Prince and Steven Lockhart finished with two shots on goal apiece, and Evan Schweizer had the other for the Britons.

Alma goalkeeper Nick Strait collected five saves as he achieved his first shutout of the season. Albion goalkeeper Andrew Bobowski was credited with four saves.

Albion (4-6-1 overall and 2-4 against MIAA rivals) will play its next three contests at home. The action begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday when the Britons host Calvin College.
