Around the MIAA
The Bulldogs returned from the break with a home game against North Park University to kick off the 2020 year. The Bulldogs defeated the Vikings 89-65 with the help from Jeremy Kalonji's 31 point performance. Kalonji added nine rebounds and shot 5-7 from beyond the arc. Jordan Harris totaled 15 points in the effort, and Kaleb Swick provided 13 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Harris needs 48 more points to join Kalonji in the 1,000 career points club. Kalonji reached the career milestone against Hiram on December 15.
Cortez Garland (Detroit, Mich.) matched his career high with 15 points, Caden Ebeling (Shelby Township, Mich.) made all 10 of his free throws and finished with 14 points, Juwan Perry (Gurnee, Ill.) produced 11 points and four assists off the bench and Quinton Armstrong (Nashville, Tenn.) completed his first double-double of the season as Albion finished non-league play at 9-2 with a 74-69 home victory over Case Western Reserve University…Albion trailed by as many as 12 in the second half.
The Scots scored a come-from-behind 97-89 victory over Finlandia University on Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon. Alma (6-5) trailed for most of the game and was down by as many as seven points before staging a comeback in the final five minutes. The Scots outscored Finlandia 20-8 to end the game; 11 points came from the free-throw line, while the other nine came by way of the three-pointer – one from Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and two from Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich.). Woodruff finished with a game-high 20 points. Harvey had 16 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) was two rebounds away from a triple-double with 13 points, 13 assists and eight boards. In all, six Scots scored in double figures.
In a Saturday night shootout, Calvin claimed a 100-90 victory over Grace Christian University at Van Noord Arena. Senior Alex Bos had a career night with 30 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Derrick DeVries finished with 29 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. The Knights shot 46 percent from the three-point line by going 14-of-30 as a team, and they also finished with 22 assists as well.

Behind a game-high 27 points by junior Shawn Pardee, Olivet upset No. 18-ranked Carthage, 88-73, at the Battle Creek Central High School Fieldhouse. Pardee also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists, while committing only one turnover. Junior Eddie Thigpen contributed a season-high 23 points. Freshman Britton Angell had 18 points. Angell and Pardee canned four three-pointers apiece. Junior Chris Martin finished with 13 points and four assists. Senior Keyon Rainey grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, including five off the offensive glass. Including the Red Men, the Comets have played four schools this season who were either ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll at the time of the game. It was first win against a school ranked in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll since Nov. 28, 2010, when Olivet beat No. 18 John Carroll.
