Frontcourt mates Caden Ebeling (MVP) and Quinton Armstrong (all-tournament) were honored for helping Albion gain victories over BaldwinWallace and Otterbein in the McDonald’s of Bluffton Classic. Ebeling scored 37 points (13-23 FG, 11-12 FT) and grabbed 14 rebounds in the two games; Armstrong chipped in with 27 points (12-15 FG, 3-5 FT) and 13 rebounds…MJ Barnes knocked down 5-of-9 shots from 3-point range and all three of his free throws in scoring a career-high 18 vs. Baldwin Wallace…Josh Palo (12), Justin McAbee (8) and Alex Warman (7) all achieved career scoring highs vs. Otterbein…Albion shot 50% (33-66) from the field vs. Otterbein.
The Scots split a pair of games, a 98-90 loss to Dubuque and an 82-72 win over Beloit, and Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich.) averaged 26 points two weeks after being named the MIAA Athlete of the Week. Kleiver scored 11 of Alma's first 13 points in the second half against the Buccaneers. After Beloit closed the gap with a 13-2 run, Kleiver ended the run with a deep three. Kleiver had 10 points in the first half on 4-of-7 shooting. He played the entire second half and scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 4-of-6 from three.
The Calvin men's basketball team picked up a pair of victories at the St. Pete Classic, defeating Emory and Henry 97-73 on December 19 and Skidmore 84-64 on December 20. Senior Derrick DeVries had 26 and junior Emmett Warners a career-high 21 points in the win over Emory and Henry. In the win over Skidmore, DeVries poured in 30 points while senior Tony DeWitte had 19 and junior Thad Shymanski 17. DeVries bumped his career scoring total to 1,166 points, moving into 16th place on the Calvin career list. Calvin will host Grace Christian on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Hope College men's basketball team posted a 3-1 record over two holiday tournaments. The Flying Dutchmen won twice at the RDV Sportsplex Classic in Orlando, Florida: 103-66 vs. Finlandia and 94-88 in overtime vs. Carleton. Hope also defeated Westminster College (Pa.), 80-77, at the RDV Sportsplex Classic but also lost to Illinois Tech, 72-58. Junior center Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich.) was named to the DeVette Classic all-tournament team.
Kalamazoo dropped a pair of close games throughout late December including a 91-77 loss at Earlham and a 89-84 defeat by Concordia (MI). Tanner Blyly led Kalamazoo in a big way as the senior guard posted games of 22 points, nine assists, and six rebounds and 15 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. Blyly's 15.9 points per game leads Kalamazoo and is tenth best in the league. His 3.7 assists per game are fourth most in the MIAA. Fellow senior Ben Reiter added 36 points in the two games for the Hornets while Jack Smith provided a spark off the bench against Concordia with 17 points. Kalamazoo returns to play on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when it opens MIAA play at Trine before heading to Adrian on Jan. 11.
Olivet lost an 88-81 decision at home to Anderson (Ind.) Dec. 21 before splitting two games at the Russ DeVette Holiday Classic. Against Anderson, junior Shawn Pardee scored a team-high 26 points. Junior Chris Martin came off the bench to score 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Junior Jared Long tallied 12 points. Junior Colin Carter grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. At the Russ DeVette Classic, the Comets fell to Illinois Tech, 73-59, before bouncing back to beat Westminster (Pa.), 87-77. Against Illinois Tech, junior Eddie Thigpen paced Olivet with 17 points. Pardee added 12 points. Martin finished with a near double-double, nine points and nine rebounds. Against Westminster, Pardee was one of four players to score in double figures, as he had a game-high 25 points. He also pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds. Freshman Noah Wiswary, and Martin and Thigpen each had 14 points.
Finished 2-1 with wins against Heidelberg (Ohio) University and Concordia Chicago...Langston Johnson became the 46th player to score 1,000 points in program history in the team's win against BW...Jake Daniels led the team in scoring for the three games at 14.7 ppg while shooting 48.1 percent (13-of-27) with 10 of his 13 made field goals coming from three-point range.
