Around the MIAA
The Adrian College men's basketball team dropped both of its first two MIAA games of the season last week. The Bulldogs opened the conference schedule on the road with a 78-55 loss on Thursday to Calvin before coming home to host Albion on Saturday. AC lost to the Britons 76-66 despite sophomore guard Jordan Harris notching his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 assists.
The men's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo in Calvin this past week to open play in the MIAA. The Scots shot 72-percent in the second half against Kalamazoo behind junior Kyle Woodruff's (Grand Blanc, Mich.) 22 points on Wednesday (Jan. 2). Then after trailing for most of the game at Calvin on Saturday (Jan. 5), Alma took the lead with 0.3 seconds left with two free throws from junior Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who was fouled on a putback attempt. Senior Kevin Gamble (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) had a double-double in both games while junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) posted one against the Knights.
Calvin opened conference play with a 1-1 record last week, defeating Adrian 78-55 on Thursday and then falling to Alma 67-66 on Saturday. In the win over Adrian, junior Derrick DeVries had 19 points, senior Austin Bykerk 14 points, sophomore Thad Shymanski 13 points and junior Alex Bos 10 points. Freshman Carson Meulenberg ripped down a career-high 16 rebounds. On Saturday, Alma nipped Calvin at the wire by connecting on a pair of free throws with three-tenths of a second left. DeVries had 23 points while senior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez had 10 points. Meulenberg had nine points and seven boards. Calvin concludes a three-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts rival Hope at 8 p.m. at Van Noord Arena. The game will feature the 199th meeting between the two rivals. On Saturday, Calvin will travel to Trine University for a 3 p.m. contest.
The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team fell in two road games this week at Alma (74-61) and at Hope (87-65). Tre Humes and Jeremiah Vincent led the way offensively at Alma with 15 and 12 points respectively. Ben Reiter's hot-hand kept Kalamazoo in its game with Hope as he went nine for 13 from the field with 23 points. Reiter connected on six of nine makes for the Hornets in the second half. Kalamazoo continues MIAA play this week as it hosts Olivet on Wednesday before traveling to Albion on Saturday.
The Olivet College men's basketball team split its first two MIAA games of the season last week. Olivet rallied from a 20-point deficit to take the lead but ultimately fell to Albion, 74-71, on a last-second three-pointer. Playing all 40 minutes, Tracy Edmond led all players with 25 points. Colin Jones finished with 19 points. Trevor Manuel had a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds. For the most part, the Comets led from start-to-finish in an 81-70 win at Trine. Jones made nine baskets, including five from behind the three-point arc, and two free throws for his 25 points. Edmond scored 22 points and dished out six assists. Manuel had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
