Around the MIAA

Adrian (3-8, 0-0)

The Adrian College men's basketball team closed out 2018 with a pair of losses in the Mount Union Holiday Classic. The Bulldogs fell 89-57 to Thomas More on Friday, Dec. 28 and lost to host Mount Union on Saturday, Dec. 29 by a score of 76-52. Adrian opens MIAA play this week with a 7:30 game at Calvin on Thursday, Jan. 3.


Albion (7-4, 0-0)

Jamezell Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Caden Ebeling (Shelby Township, Mich.) represented Albion on the all-tournament team in the McDonald's holiday event hosted by Bluffton University. Davis scored a season-high 28 points (11-15 FG, 6-9 3-pt. FG) and dished out four assists in Albion's opening round victory over Grove City, Pa., College. Ebeling has completed a double-double in three of Albion's last four games (averaging 18.3 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 73.5 percent from the field in that span). Ebeling scored a career-high 31 in the McDonald's Tournament title game against Bluffton… Albion made 17 3-point field goals in the victory over Grove City (only Alma with 18 against Wisconsin-Whitewater) made more by a MIAA team in non-league action this season… At 7-4, Albion has its best non-league record since 2014 when the Britons were 7-3 prior to the start of MIAA action.

Alma (1-11, 0-0)

After a 61-47 setback to St. Norbert on the road Dec. 28, Alma rebounded with their first win of the season, a 71-64 victory against St. Scholastica in DePere, Wis. Kyle Woodruff led the Scots in the win with 21 points.


Calvin (5-6, 0-0)

Calvin will open a three-game conference homestand on Thursday when the Knights welcome Adrian to Van Noord Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Knights will follow with home games against Alma (January 5) and Hope (January 9). Calvin has not been home since November 28 and has not been in action since December 19. Calvin's most recent two games game at the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Hope College. At the invitational, Calvin defeated Mount St. Joseph 83-62 on December 18 and then fell to La Roche 74-68 on December 19. Calvin junior Derrick DeVries was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the two-day event.


Hope (7-4, 0-0)

The Hope College men's basketball team won at Anderson (Indiana), 86-78, on Saturday in the final non-league game of the season. Senior guard Jason Beckman (Shelby, Mich.) topped the Flying Dutchmen with 27 points. He made all 10 of his free-throw attempts. Hope (7-4 overall) also received 23 points from junior guard Riley Lewis (Williamston, Mich.) and 16 from sophomore center Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich.).

Kalamazoo (3-8, 0-0)

Did not compete. Kalamazoo opens MIAA action Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Alma as part of the MIAA/P.C.U.P.S. Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.


Olivet (4-7, 0-0)

The Comets tallied a key 69-63 win over NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State on the road Dec. 30, with Trevor Manuel leading the way with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.


Trine (7-4, 0-0)

The Thunder lost to Mount Union Dec. 28, 105-66, and Thomas More Dec. 29, 89-73.
