Around the MIAA
The Adrian College men’s basketball dropped two close games in the St. Andrews Products Classic hosted by Trine University this past weekend. The Bulldogs went to overtime for the first time this season on Friday, Dec. 21 against Heidelberg, before losing in the extra period 82-73. AC then dropped a heartbreaker to Spalding on Saturday, losing by one point, 59-58, as a free throw wouldn’t go with one second remaining. The Bulldogs are back in action this coming weekend when they travel down to Ohio for the Mount Union Holiday Classic, where they will play Thomas More and host Mount Union.
The Scots dropped two games during a road trip to Arizona last week to Sul Ross State and No. 4 Whitman. Freshman Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) led Alma in scoring in both games and was the only Scot named to the All-Tournament team, while junior Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) posted 16 points and eight rebounds against Sul Ross State and senior Scott Maki (Grand Blanc, Mich./Holly) had a season-high 10 points. Junior Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) totaled eight and nine assists in the games.
Defeated Mt. St. Joseph Dec. 18, 83-62, before falling to La Roche Dec. 19, 74-68, at the Great Lakes Invitational in Holland, Mich.
Hope split its games at the second annual Great Lakes Invitational/30th annual Russ DeVette Holiday Classic. The Flying Dutchmen defeated eight-win La Roche (Pa.), 92-87, behind a game-high 28 points from junior guard Riley Lewis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston). Teddy Ray preserved the win with a blocked shot in the closing seconds and Hope holding a one-point lead. The Flying Dutchmen were edged by Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), 63-62, in the tournament finale. Sophomore center Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Senior guard Jason Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) also was named to the all-tournament team.
The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team defeated Earlham College 74-66 in the Hornets' only contest last week. The win puts Kalamazoo at 3-8 overall as the Hornets prepare for conference play beginning Jan. 2 at Alma.Tanner Blyly and Ben Reiter each scored 15 points in the win over Spring Arbor while Jeremiah Vincent scored 13 points. Drake Thompson scored seven points with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Comets lost on the road to NCAA Division II foe Ferris State Dec. 17, 116-83, before an 87-71 road setback to Elmhurst Dec. 20.
The Thunder went 2-1 last week, with wins at home against Spalding Dec. 21, 93-55, and Heidelberg Dec. 22, 88-80.
