Around the MIAA
Adrian (3-14, 0-6)
The Adrian College men's basketball team lost a pair of conference games last week. The Bulldogs fell on the road to Olivet, 75-54 on Wednesday. Junior forward Jeremy Kalonji led the team in points for the second straight game, scoring 26 against the Comets. Adrian then dropped a close game at home against Alma on Saturday by five, 74-69. Sophomore guards Jordan Harris and Sam Colbert each scored over 20 points in the loss.
Albion (12-5, 5-1)
Alma (4-13, 3-3)
The men's basketball team went 1-1 last week, falling 87-74 at home to Hope and holding off Adrian 74-69 on the road. Alma maintains the sixth seed in the MIAA standings nearly halfway through the conference season. Although junior guard Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) and sophomore guard Amari Hudson (Highland Park, Mich.) both scored new career-highs against the Flying Dutchmen, Alma allowed Hope to shoot 52-percent from the field and 47-percent from three. Junior Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored a season-high 19 points in the win at Adrian, as the Scots scored 48 second-half points and held on the for the despite a late push from the Bulldogs.
Calvin (8-9, 3-3)
Calvin split a pair of games last week, downing Kalamazoo 83-71 and falling at Albion 69-60. Derrick DeVries led Calvin in the win over Kalamazoo with 19 points while Tony DeWitte had 18 and Jason Walter 11. Calvin was 8 of 19 from three-point range in the win over the Hornets and held a 41-32 rebounding advantage. In the loss at Albion, Calvin led 36-31 at halftime but fell victim to hot perimeter shooting by the Britons in the second half. DeVries pumped in 22 points to boost his league scoring average to 19.5 points a game. He currently ranks second in the MIAA scoring race in conference play. Walter was strong again off the bench with 11 points while Alex Bos had 10 points and nine rebounds. Calvin outrebounded the Britons 45-34. The Knights close out the first half of the league schedule on Wednesday, hosting Olivet at 7:30 p.m. Calvin will then travel to Adrian on Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
Hope 10-7, 3-3)
Kalamazoo (3-14, 0-6)
Kalamazoo dropped two road contests this week. The Hornets' losses came at Calvin (83-71) on Wednesday and at Trine (74-63) on Saturday. Tanner Blyly led Kalamazoo in both games. The junior guard tallied 21 points and six assists on Wednesday and followed that with 27 points and six rebounds on Saturday. Bass Ollie added 18 points in the loss at Calvin. The Hornets will return to play on Wednesday, Jan. 23 when they host Adrian at 8 p.m.
Olivet (9-8, 5-1)
Olivet moved into a three-way tie for first-place in the MIAA standings with two wins last week -- 75-54 over Adrian and 89-62 over Hope. Against Adrian, senior Trevor Manuel finished the game with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked four shots. Senior Tracy Edmond also scored 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting and recorded seven assists. Senior Colin Jones scored 11 points, pulled down seven rebounds, blocked four shots and made three steals. Against Hope, Olivet made 32-of-60 baskets (53.3 percent), including 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from behind the arc. The Comets also committed only four turnovers compared to 17 miscues for Hope. All five Olivet starters reached double digits in the scoring column. Manuel led the way with 17 points. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Edmond scored 17 points and recorded eight assists. Senior John McAdoo netted 12 points and made four steals. Jones and senior Dee Roberts each had 11 points. Olivet's four turnovers were a season-low. The previous low was seven in the win against Thomas More (Ky.) University. The 11 three-pointers matches a single-game high for this season. The 27-point margin of victory is the second-highest ever in school history in a win against Hope. The only larger margin of victory was 37 points, 102-65, on Jan. 9, 1971.
Trine (12-5, 5-1)
Trine went 2-0 for the week with wins against Albion (79-71) and Kalamazoo (74-63). Langston Johnson led the team in scoring against Albion with 16 points and scored 17 against Kalamazoo to average 16.5 ppg. for the week.
