MIAA Athletes of the Week - March 2, 2020
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 16 individual student-athletes as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on March 1, 2020. 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition and selected by the MIAA Conference Office.
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week

Logan Huff, Alma
Junior, Infield
Johannesburg, Mich.

The Scots' third baseman led the team to four wins at the RussMatt Tournament in Florida. He dominated at the plate with a .370 batting average, four home runs, and 13 RBIs. He started the tournament with a home run and five RBIs in the first game. In Alma's doubleheader against Union College (NY), Huff went 5-for-7 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Huff is the current team leader in RBI (20), home runs (six) and slugging percentage (.971).


MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Pierce Banks, Adrian
Senior, Pitcher
Sterling Heights, Mich.

Senior pitcher Pierce Banks spun a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings to help set the tone for Adrian’s first win of the season over Southwestern (Texas), 3-1, in the opening game of the Millsaps College Classic. The Pirates loaded the bases in the third inning, but Banks struck out the side to preserve a 1-0 lead at the time.

Banks tied his career-best with 11 strikeouts--first set on April 21, 2018, against Albion--and moves within one punch-out of Craig Reynolds, who is fourth in school history with 213 career strikeouts from 2003-06.

MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week

Hannah Biddlecome, Calvin
Freshman, Outfield
Portage, Mich.

For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin sophomore Hannah Biddlecome has been selected MIAA Player of the Week. An outfielder, Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) led Calvin to three victories this past weekend as the Knights defeated Millikin 15-13 and then took both ends of a Saturday doubleheader from Buena Vista by scores of 10-1 and 6-1.
During the three-game set, Biddlecome batted .500 going 5-for-10 at the plate with six runs scored and two RBI. She stole three bases and walked twice, compiling an on-base percentage of .571. She was flawless defensively, fielding five chances without an error.


MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Daniella Little, Alma
Freshman, Pitcher
Wheaton, Ill.

Little pitched two complete games against Capital University (OH) and Hanover College (IN), allowing one earned run and striking out 12 batters over 14 innings. She also earned the win in a 5-4 victory over Capital in which she struck out two of the three batters she faced.
Little is currently the team leader in both strikeouts (14) and ERA (0.47). She has allowed 10 hits in 15 total innings thus far.

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Jeremy Kalonji, Adrian
Senior, Forward
Fort Wayne, Ind.

Senior Jeremy Kalonji has been finishing his regular college career with a bang. Kalonji has scored 10 or more points in every game this season except for one. In the MIAA Tournament championship game, Kalonji finished with 29 points for the Bulldogs with 11 rebounds and was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. In Friday night's semifinal game against Calvin, Kalonji led the Bulldogs with 30 points with nine rebounds and was 13-of-15 from the line.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Kenedy Schoonveld, Hope
Junior, Guard
Zeeland, Mich.

Kenedy Schoonveld led the Flying Dutch to an MIAA Tournament title by averaging 14.5 points and 2.5 steals over two games. Against Trine University in the championship game, Schoonveld totaled 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting during a 59-55 victory. Against Calvin University in the semifinals, Schoonveld scored Hope's first eight points and finished with 14 points in only 17 minutes of play of a 78-46 victory.

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Max Leventis, Adrian
Sophomore, Midfielder/Face-Off
Howell, Mich.

Sophomore Max Leventis was dominant in the "X" winning 17 of 19 face-offs and scooped up 14 ground balls in Adrian's 14-3 win against Hiram, avenging a 14-8 loss to the Terriers in 2019. He was instrumental in the Bulldogs' possession game that included 10-for-10 on clears and the team scored six goals immediately after a Leventis FO win. Leventis 89.5 face-off percentage ranks third in Adrian's single-game history. He now has 270 face-off wins in his career to rank No. 2 all-time, passing former Bulldogs Zach Kozlowsk (254, 2013-14) and Ryan Werhane (248, 2009-11). 


MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Scott Shepard, Albion
Senior, Attacker
Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Albion went 1-1 this week. In their 12-5 win vs Elmhurst, Scott had 3 Goals on 6 shots on goal and one assist with 3 turnovers. In their 11-12 loss to Oberlin  Scott had 4 goals on 6 shots on goal and 2 turnovers.

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Gwen Davis, Kalamazoo
Sophomore, Goalkeeper
Ann Arbor, Mich.

Gwen has played a pivotal role in the Hornets’ 3-1 start as she continued her strong play this week. Davis began the week with an eight save effort in Kalamazoo’s win over Augustana as she played all 60 minutes in goal. She followed up the performance by shutting out Elmhurst throughout the entirety of the first half before paving the way for freshman Mae Scott to finish the game.


MIAA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week

Rachel Madar, Kalamazoo
Junior, Midfield
DeWitt, Mich.

Rachel was paramount in Kalamazoo’s 2-0 week as she scored 15 goals including a school record-tying nine goals in the 17-7 win over Augustana. She put 85.7 percent of her shot attempts on goal and converted 83.3 percent of those into goals. Madar also won 24 draw controls in the two games including 18 in the 20-0 shutout of Elmhurst on Sunday.

MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Daniel Huan, Calvin
Grand Rapids, Mich.

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin senior Daniel Huan has been named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Huan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) helped Calvin post a 3-1 record last week as the Knights claimed dual match victories over Lakeland, Ripon and Wisconsin-Lutheran along with a loss to Lake Forest.
During the week, Huan went 4-0 in singles play and 4-0 in doubles. He picked up Calvin's only singles point in a 7-2 loss to Lake Forest and also combined for Calvin's lone doubles point in the match. Huan recorded his 4-0 singles mark while playing at either No. 4 or No. 5 singles. In doubles, he filled spots at either No. 2 or No. 3 doubles.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Ella Knight, Kalamazoo
Leesburg, Ind.

Sophomore Ella Knight delivered a 4-0 week for Kalamazoo as she started it with an 8-4 victory with Maddy Winarski in No. 3 doubles in Kalamazoo’s 6-3 win over Lake Forest Saturday. Knight won her four singles match at 6-3, 6-4. On Sunday, Knight and Winarski began the match with an 8-0 win at doubles. She finished her perfect weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 singles victory over Illinois Tech.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Bryce Reynolds, Calvin

Byron Center, Mich.

For the second time this year, Calvin junior Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) has been named the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week for Men's Indoor Track and Field. At the MIAA Championships this past weekend, Reynolds set a new MIAA record in the weight throw, winning the event with a heave of 59-11 3/4. His throw currently ranks eighth nationally. He later finished third in the shot put with a season-best throw of 48-7 1/2. Reynolds helped the Calvin men finish second in the final team standings with 145 points.

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Jonathon Ellis, Calvin

Baltimore, Md.

Calvin junior Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) has been named the MIAA Athlete of the Week for Men's Indoor Track and Field. At the MIAA Championships this past weekend, Ellis captured a league title in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 14:43.99. He followed by taking third in the 3,000-meter run (8:45.68), helping Calvin finish second in the final team standings with 145 points. His time in the 5,000-meter run currently ranks 18th nationally. 

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Mitchel Achien'g, Hope
Senior, Multi
Nairobi, Kenya

Mitchel Achien'g led the Flying Dutch to a convincing indoor league championship performance on Saturday at Trine, winning three individual events. In the triple jump, Achien'g set an MIAA record while repeating as champion with a leap of 11.25 meters (36 feet, 11 inches). She another MIAA record, as well as a school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02 seconds. Achien'g also took first in the long jump with a leap of 5.35 meters (17-6 3/4). Achien'g placed third in the 60-meter dash with a run of 8.02 seconds.

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Evie Bultemeyer, Trine
Junior, Distance
Fort Wayne, Ind.

Junior Evie Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finished as the individual champion in three events that included the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter dash and mile run and was also part of a winning relay team.  In the 400m, she posted a winning time of 59.08 seconds and then had a top overall mark of 2:17.59 in the 800m.  She capped her individual day on the track with a time of 5:08.27 in the mile to take top honors.
