MIAA cancels spring season in lieu of COVID-19

MIAA – In the ever-changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Michigan, the Presidents’ Council of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has voted to cancel all-conference and non-conference competitions for the spring season effective Monday, March 16.

While we recognize the disappointment that will be felt for all spring sports student-athletes, coaches, and families the continued progression and uncertainty of COVID-19 made continuing play indefensible for the health and safety of our students, coaches, administrators, support staff, and our communities.

“My heart hurts for the student-athletes as they have prepared all year, and for some their entire lives, to play this season; for many their final collegiate season. The Presidents of the MIAA struggled in making this decision, but in the end, we really felt it was the right thing to do. It is imperative that we place the health and safety of our student-athletes and communities before competition,” Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook

The MIAA will work with the NCAA and the other Division III commissioners to have this season of eligibility reinstated for the spring sport student-athletes who would like to compete next spring.
