FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced Friday (July 24) the 114 teams that earned the MIAA Team GPA Award for the 2019-20 academic year, where three notable firsts were achieved by member institutions.
The MIAA Team GPA Award is presented to conference athletic teams that achieve a 3.300 or better GPA for an academic year. Grade-point averages are calculated at the end of the academic year.
Eight MIAA member institutions - Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, Saint Mary's, and Trine - had 50 percent or better of their MIAA-sponsored athletic teams that were named Team GPA honorees.
Also notable for the second consecutive year for the MIAA Team GPA Award was 100 percent of teams in an MIAA-sponsored sport to achieve the team academic standard by four sports: softball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, and volleyball. The 2019-20 academic year marked the third consecutive year for volleyball.
Eight athletic departments had double figures of teams honored, with Calvin and Trine leading the way with 19 team honorees each. Hope was second with 15 teams, and Kalamazoo third with 14 squads. Olivet came in fourth with 13 programs honored.
Of the 114 programs honored, 28 surpassed a 3.600 team GPA for the 2019-20 academic year, with four reaching the 3.800 plateau. Teams surpassing 3.800 in 2019-20 were Trine's women's basketball, women's cross country, and tennis along with Olivet's women's cross country.
Fourteen of the 17 teams that won an MIAA Championship also earned Team GPA Award honors. Four MIAA Tournament champions were Team GPA Award honorees. Spring sports were canceled due to COVID-19 and therefore did not have the opportunity to achieve this designation. Twenty-two of the MIAA's 23 sponsored sports had at least one team named at Team GPA honoree.
The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year. To note, both Calvin’s women’s cross country and Hope women’s cross country are the only programs to earn the Team GPA Award 22 consecutive academic years.
