The Calvin College volleyball team advanced to the National Championship game for the second time in three seasons and fifth time since 2010, but in a re-match of the 2010 National Championship, Emory University prevailed to defeat the Knights, 3-0, in the National Championship of the 2018 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship Nov. 17 at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
After a close 25-22 first set, Emory was emphatic in their 25-16 and 25-12 set wins to close the match. Calvin (33-2) was unable to slow down a hot Emory attack, as the Eagles hit .364 in their three-set win.
Calvin advanced to the National Championship after a thrilling five-set win over UW-Eau Claire Nov. 16, prevailing 15-13 in the decisive set; senior Anna Kamp tallied both of the final points on kills to close the match. In that contest, Kamp finished with 18 kills while Sarah DeVries had a triple-double with 11 kills, 29 assists, and 13 blocks; seven digs rounded out her all-around performance against the Blugolds.
The Knights, the top-ranked team after reseeding, defeated eighth-seeded Aurora 3-1 in the National Quarterfinals Nov. 15. DeVries led the attack with 20 kills, while Kelsey Smith added 12 kills to just two errors to hit .370 over four sets. Calvin held Aurora to .137 hitting percentage thanks to 14.0 blocks as a team.
