MIAA Announces Athletes of the Week for April 17

On Monday, the MIAA awarded 14 weekly honors for standout performances in men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Earning MIAA Player of the Week honors for April 17 are:

Defensive Player of the Week

Trevor McManus, Albion

Freshman, GK
Canton, Mich. 

• Gave up just eight goals in a pair of MIAA road victories, including just three in a 14-5 win at Adrian April 11

• Posted a 66.7 save percentage in two games, including 70 percent against Adrian

• In complete game victory at Alma April 15, tallied nine saves

Offensive Player of the Week

Gunnar Elder, Hope

Senior, A
East Grand Rapids, Mich. 

• In two MIAA victories last week, totalled 13 assists, including eight against Calvin April 11 to set a program record for assists in a game

• Added three goals for the week while also gathering five ground balls 

• Ranks 22nd in the NCAA in assists per game (2.42 apg)

Women's Lacrosse


Defensive Player of the Week

Clare Theisen, Saint Mary's

Junior, M
Downers Grove, Ill.

• Led Saint Marys in ground balls (16) and caused turnovers (11) in a 2-1 week against MIAA opponents

• Twice had game-highs in ground balls (seven vs. Calvin, four vs. Alma) and had team-high six ground balls against Albion

• Also tallied five points with three goals and two assists in three games

Women's Lacrosse


Offensive Player of the Week

Emily Cefaratti, Calvin

Senior, A
Hinsdale, Ill.

• In a 3-0 week for Calvin against MIAA challengers, scored nine goals to go with seven assists

• In 11-9 road win at Saint Mary's April 11, posted four goals and three assists to factor into 63 percent of Calvin's offense

• Had an 85.7 shots on goal percentage for the week; also added six ground balls and three draw controls



Pitcher of the Week

Trevor VanDuyn, Calvin

Freshman, P
Jenison, Mich. 

• Made three appearances for the Knights, earning three saves against Albion during the four-game series

• In 4.0 innings of work, tallied five strikeouts while not giving up an earned run

• Gave up just six hits - all singles - to aid the Knights in a 4-1 week overall



Position Player of the Week

Tanner Gilmore, Hope

Freshman, IF
Murrieta, Calif.

• Helped Hope to a 5-1 week against MIAA opponents, including a four-game series sweep against Olivet; batted .450 with a .750 slugging percentage

• Went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in 18-2 win at Olivet April 15

• Finished the week with five runs scored, two home runs, and eight RBI



Pitcher of the Week

Sydney Jones, Hope

Junior, P
South Lyon, Mich.

• Took to the circle for three games, including two complete game shutouts, in a 4-0 week for Hope against MIAA opponents

• Fired 15 strikeouts in one-hit, seven-inning shutout against Kalamazoo April 12

• For the week, struck out 29 batters to one walk in 14.0 innings

Sierra Mutschler, Hope

Junior, IF
Wayland, Mich.

• Helped Hope remain unbeaten in MIAA play with .636 batting average and 1.364 slugging percentage in four MIAA wins

• In doubleheader sweep of Olivet April 15, went 4-of-5 at the plate with one home run and two doubles

• Did not strike out in 13 plate appearances, also was error-free in the infield in 11 fielding chances

Men's Tennis


Player of the Week

Daniel Henry, Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, Mich.

• Competed at No. 2 singles against Hope April 13, winning 6-0, 6-1 along with a victory at No. 3 doubles

• Moved up to No. 1 singles against Calvin April 15, winning his match 6-0, 6-1 to aid in Kalamazoo's 9-0 win over the Knights

Women's Tennis


Player of the Week

Claire Spoelhof, Calvin

Holland, Mich. 

• At No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Knights, aided Calvin to 9-0 victory against Albion April 12

• In giving Albion their first MIAA loss of the season, stepped in at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 victory

• Rallied in singles play, recovering from a 1-5 deficit in a first-set tiebreaker to rally with six points to win the set; finished with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win

Men's Outdoor Field


Athlete of the Week

Nick Gerber, Trine

Goshen, Ind.

• Named Most Valuable Field Athlete at the Indiana Division III Championships meet April 15

• Won the hammer throw with a career-best effort of 52.31 meters, which ranks first in the MIAA and 34th nationally

• Posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.44 meters

Men's Outdoor Track


Athlete of the Week

Andrew Philipose, Calvin

Mount Prospect, Ill.

• Ran the 10,00m run at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic April 14, finishing 18th in a field with Division I, Division II, and unattached competitors with a time of 30:11.05

• That time ranks first in the MIAA this season and is seventh in NCAA Division III

Women's Outdoor Field


Athlete of the Week

Kara Eck, Trine

Auburn, Ind.

• Was a two-time winner in the throws at the Indiana Division III Championships April 15, winning both the hammer (55.11m) and shot put (13.34m)

• Not only was her hammer throw a meet record, but ranks sixth in the country at DIII; her shot put ranks 15th nationally

Women's Outdoor Track


Athlete of the Week

Jessica Shaw, Albion

Allegan, Mich.

• Placed 10th in the 10,000m run at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic April 14, competing against Division I and Division II challengers

• Her time of 36:09.91 leads the MIAA and is eighth in the nation
