2019 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Bracket (pdf) | 2019 MIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket (pdf)
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced today the expansion of the conference's men's and women's basketball tournaments to six teams, effective with the 2019 MIAA Tournaments.
The MIAA Board of Control voted to pass a proposal from both the men's and women's basketball coaches committees to expand the tournament to six teams to enhance the student-athlete experience while still maintaining the standard of obligating teams to qualify for postseason play through regular season competition.
"The expansion of both the men's and women's basketball tournament fields has been discussed for more than three years," said MIAA Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook. "We believe that this expansion honors the top two teams in regular season play and affords the postseason experience for two additional teams. We expanded our men's and women's soccer and volleyball this fall and the additional excitement and energy was contagious. I would like to thank the coaches committee and sport coordinators for all the work put into finding the right fit for the MIAA."
The modification for the tournaments, which determines the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Basketball Championship, grants the top two seeds a bye into the semifinal rounds, while the top seed will receive the benefit of hosting both the semifinals and final at their home venue. The No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed in the first round, while the No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed.
For 2019, the women's basketball tournament will feature first-round games to be played on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The men's basketball tournament will contest first-round play Wednesday, Feb. 20. All first-round games will be played at 7 p.m. to reduce missed class time for student-athletes.
For both the men's and women's basketball tournaments, semifinal action will be played Friday, Nov. 22. Both the MIAA Tournament Championship games will be held Saturday, Nov. 23 at the No. 1 seed host venue.
For 2019 and all odd number years moving forward, women's basketball will play the Tuesday date, while men's basketball will play the Wednesday date for first-round games. On even number years, men will have the Tuesday date, women with the Wednesday date.
